A practitioner of Unani medicine, a traditional healing system rooted in Greco-Arab and Persian medical philosophy.
What hakims do
Hakims diagnose patients by pulse, urine, and temperament analysis, then prescribe herbal preparations, regimenal therapies such as cupping (hijama) and Turkish bath, and dietary changes. They emphasize balancing the four humors that Unani medicine identifies.
Training path
The standard credential is the Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), a five-and-a-half-year program with internship, recognized in India by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine. Some hakims continue to a master’s in Unani medicine.
Work setting
Most hakims practice in South Asia, especially India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, in private clinics, government Ayush hospitals, and herbal pharmacies. A small number practice in immigrant communities in the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Gulf states.
