PROFESSIONS

Osteopath

Filter:

A physician trained in both conventional medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment of the musculoskeletal system.

What osteopaths do

Osteopathic physicians, or DOs, diagnose and treat the full range of medical conditions like MDs do, with additional training in osteopathic manipulative treatment that uses hands-on techniques to evaluate and improve musculoskeletal function and overall health.

Training path

DOs complete four years of osteopathic medical school followed by residency, ranging from three years for family medicine to seven or more for surgical specialties. They take the COMLEX-USA exams and sit for board certification in their specialty.

Work setting

DOs practice in every medical specialty alongside MDs in family practice clinics, hospitals, surgical centers, sports-medicine offices, and academic medical centers. About one-quarter of US medical students now train at osteopathic schools.
