An indoor target sport in which players roll a heavy ball down a wooden lane to knock over ten pins arranged in a triangle.
Origin and rules
Ten-pin bowling was developed in 19th-century United States as a workaround for state laws banning nine-pin bowling. The American Bowling Congress was founded in 1895, with the international body following in 1952.
How it plays
A player rolls a 7- to 16-pound ball at ten pins set in a triangle at the end of an 18-metre lane. Each frame allows two rolls; knocking all pins on the first is a strike, and on the second a spare. Ten frames make a game, with bonus rolls in the tenth.
Competition
The PBA Tour in the United States is the leading professional circuit. The IBF World Championships, Asian Games, and the IBF World Cup are the major international events. The United States, South Korea, Sweden, Japan, and Malaysia are leading nations.
