ISLANDS

Saint Vincent

Filter:

The main island of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, dominated by the active La Soufrière volcano.

Geography

Saint Vincent is volcanic, with La Soufrière, an active stratovolcano in the north, rising to 1,234 m. A series of eruptions in 2020 and 2021 forced the evacuation of about 16,000 residents from the northern third of the island.

History

The island was the last of the Lesser Antilles to be colonized by Europeans because of fierce resistance by the Black Carib, or Garifuna, population. Britain finally took full control in 1797.

Geography

The Grenadines, a chain of smaller islands stretching south toward Grenada, are also part of the country. Bequia, Mustique, and Mayreau are among the most well-known.
