Geography
The Solomon archipelago stretches roughly 1,500 km in a double chain. The largest islands are Guadalcanal, Malaita, Makira, Santa Isabel, Choiseul, and New Georgia. Mount Popomanaseu on Guadalcanal is the highest peak at 2,447 m.
History
Guadalcanal was the site of a pivotal six-month campaign between Allied and Japanese forces from August 1942, the first major Allied offensive of the Pacific War. The capital Honiara on Guadalcanal grew from the wartime base of Henderson Field.
Culture
The Solomons are home to more than 70 languages. The bulk of the population identifies as Melanesian, with smaller Polynesian and Micronesian communities on outlying atolls.
