ISLANDS

Samoa (Island)

Filter:

The Samoan archipelago of volcanic islands in the South Pacific, divided between independent Samoa and American Samoa.

Geography

The Samoan Islands stretch roughly 480 km across the South Pacific. The two main inhabited landmasses are Savai’i and Upolu in the west, with the smaller Tutuila and Manua group to the east. All are of volcanic origin.

Politics

The chain is divided between Samoa, an independent state with capital at Apia on Upolu, and American Samoa, an unincorporated United States territory with capital at Pago Pago on Tutuila. The international date line runs between them.

Culture

Samoa is regarded as a cradle of Polynesian culture, and fa’a Samoa, the traditional way of life, remains a strong organizing force. The matai chiefly system governs extended families and villages.
