A volcanic caldera in the southern Aegean known for cliffside whitewashed villages overlooking a sunken crater.
Geography
Santorini is the remnant of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. The Minoan eruption around 1600 BCE collapsed the central island, leaving a steep-walled flooded caldera roughly 12 km wide. The two new central islets, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, formed in subsequent eruptions.
Tourism
The towns of Oia and Fira perch on the western caldera rim and are famous for sunset views. Painted cliff-side houses in white and blue have made Santorini one of the most photographed landscapes in the world.
Culture
Excavations at Akrotiri in the south revealed a remarkably preserved Bronze Age town buried in volcanic ash, sometimes compared to the Greek Pompeii.
