Sicily (Island)

Filter:

The largest island in the Mediterranean and an autonomous region of Italy, dominated by the active Mount Etna.

Geography

Sicily is roughly triangular, separated from the Italian mainland by the narrow Strait of Messina. Mount Etna on the east coast is Europe’s tallest active volcano at about 3,357 m, with the height varying as eruptions add or remove summit material.

History

Sicily has been settled by Sicels, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, and many others. Each era has left enduring architecture and influence, evident in Palermo’s Arab-Norman buildings and the Greek temples at Agrigento.

Culture

Sicilian cuisine reflects the island’s layered history, with dishes such as arancini, caponata, and cannoli. The Sicilian language is recognized by UNESCO as a distinct vulnerable Romance tongue.
