The second-largest island in the Mediterranean and an autonomous region of Italy, with rugged interior highlands.
Geography
Sardinia is dominated by an old, eroded interior with the Gennargentu massif rising to Punta La Marmora at 1,834 m. The Costa Smeralda on the northeast and beaches across the south draw heavy seasonal tourism.
History
The nuragic civilization built about 7,000 conical stone towers, or nuraghi, between roughly 1800 and 500 BCE. Many remain standing. Sardinia later passed through Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, Pisan, Aragonese, and Savoyard rule.
Culture
Sardinian, classified as a separate Romance language, is widely spoken alongside Italian. The interior region of Ogliastra is among five recognized Blue Zones with unusually high concentrations of centenarians.
