The southernmost and least densely populated borough of New York City, lying southwest of Manhattan.

Geography

Staten Island sits between the Lower New York Bay and the Newark Bay, separated from New Jersey by the narrow Arthur Kill. Todt Hill, at 124 m, is the highest natural point on the United States Atlantic coast south of Maine.

Transit

The free Staten Island Ferry connects the island to Lower Manhattan with views of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan skyline. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, completed in 1964, links Staten Island to Brooklyn.

History

The British took the island from the Dutch in 1664 and renamed it Richmond. It became a New York City borough in 1898 as part of the city’s consolidation.
