A North American prairie wildflower, also called coneflower, grown for its bright daisy-like blooms and roots harvested for an immune-supporting herbal supplement.
Description
Echinacea sends up sturdy stems bearing large daisy flowers with drooping pink, purple, or white petals around a spiny orange-brown central cone. The leaves are rough, lance-shaped, and toothed.
Cultivation
A tough prairie perennial, echinacea tolerates drought, heat, and poor soil once established. It blooms midsummer to autumn and self-sows in good conditions.
Uses
Native Plains tribes used echinacea roots for many ailments. Today it is one of the worlds best-selling herbal supplements, marketed for cold and flu support, and a staple of pollinator gardens.
