A North American perennial wildflower with tall plumes of bright yellow late-summer flowers, a critical late nectar source for bees and migrating butterflies.
Description
Goldenrod produces sturdy upright stems clothed in narrow lance-shaped leaves, topped by panicles of countless small yellow daisy flowers in late summer and early autumn.
Cultivation
Tough, drought tolerant, and spreading through rhizomes, goldenrod thrives in meadows, roadsides, and pollinator gardens. Garden cultivars are better behaved than wild forms.
Uses
Despite its reputation as a hay fever culprit (actually caused by ragweed), goldenrod attracts huge numbers of bees and butterflies. It has long been used in herbal tea and yields a gold dye.
