A Brazilian tuberous houseplant grown for large velvety bell-shaped flowers in deep purple, red, or white, often gifted as a flowering pot plant.
Description
Gloxinia produces a rosette of soft velvety leaves from a flattened tuber. The trumpet-shaped flowers rise on short stems and are often as wide as a hand, ruffled and brilliantly colored.
Cultivation
Gloxinia needs warmth, high humidity, and even moisture during growth. After flowering it goes dormant; the tuber rests several weeks before regrowing.
Uses
Florist gloxinias are produced as flowering gift pots that bloom for many weeks. Hybridizers have produced miniature and double-flowered forms popular with hobbyists.
