A South Pacific evergreen conifer with symmetrical tiered branches, often sold as a small living Christmas tree but not actually a true pine.
Description
Norfolk pine has a strong central leader and almost perfectly horizontal whorls of soft, needle-like branches. Indoors it stays small but on its native island it can grow over 60 metres tall.
Cultivation
It prefers bright indirect light, cool rooms, and even moisture. Hot dry indoor air or low light cause needle drop and a lopsided habit.
Uses
A favorite living holiday tree in mild climates and a popular houseplant year round, Norfolk pine is also planted as an avenue tree in coastal subtropical cities.
