A tropical American shrub whose small green-white flowers release an intense sweet perfume after dusk, intoxicating in warm gardens.
Description
Night blooming jasmine, despite the name, is in the tomato family. It is a loose shrub with simple oval leaves and clusters of slim tubular pale yellow-green flowers that open at night.
Cultivation
It thrives in warm climates with regular watering and full sun, blooming several times a year. In cool zones it can be grown in a pot and brought indoors before frost.
Uses
The night-time fragrance perfumes evening patios. Berries and leaves are toxic if eaten. In folk belief the strong perfume is sometimes thought to attract or repel spirits depending on region.
