Ancient ferns whose trunks rise several metres above the ground, carrying a crown of enormous fronds, surviving relics of the Carboniferous landscape.
Description
Tasmanian tree fern has a stout fibrous brown trunk built of layered root mantles, topped with a circular crown of large pinnate fronds up to three metres long that arch outward.
Cultivation
It needs cool, humid, sheltered conditions with regular watering down the trunk (which acts as the main absorbent organ). Even fragments of trunk can root and resprout new crowns.
Uses
A spectacular ornamental in sheltered mild gardens of Europe and the Americas, the tree fern was once over-collected from old-growth forests and is now subject to harvest controls in its range.
