Description
Umbrella plant has compound leaves of seven to sixteen oval leaflets spreading from a central point like an umbrella canopy. Mature outdoor plants form striking red flower spikes called octopus trees.
Cultivation
A tough indoor plant, umbrella plant tolerates moderate light, drying soil, and dry air. Pinching stem tips keeps it bushy; otherwise it grows leggy and tall.
Uses
A staple of offices, classrooms, and homes since the 1960s, the umbrella plant is sometimes considered invasive in Florida and the Hawaiian Islands where it has naturalized in wet forests.
