What otolaryngologists do
Otolaryngologists, commonly called ENT surgeons, treat conditions ranging from chronic sinusitis and hearing loss to thyroid tumors and head-and-neck cancers. They perform surgeries such as tonsillectomy, sinus surgery, cochlear implants, and free-flap reconstructions.
Training path
After medical school, otolaryngologists complete a five-year residency in head and neck surgery. Many add one- to two-year fellowships in subspecialties such as facial plastics, pediatric ENT, otology, rhinology, or head and neck oncology.
Work setting
ENTs work in private group practices, hospitals, academic medical centers, and military or veterans’ facilities. Many cover hospital trauma call alongside daily outpatient clinics and operating-room days.
