A Brazilian epiphytic cactus with flat segmented stems that bursts into magenta, pink, or white tubular flowers around the winter holidays.
Description
Unlike desert cacti, Christmas cactus grows on tree branches in cool Brazilian rain forests. Its arching stems are made of flattened, smooth-edged segments that end in dangling jewel-tinted flowers.
Cultivation
It needs bright indirect light, regular watering during growth, and a dry, cool autumn rest to set buds. Sudden temperature shifts make the flower buds drop.
Uses
A classic indoor holiday plant, Christmas cactus often lives for many decades and is passed between generations as a treasured heirloom.
