A Mediterranean tuberous plant whose nodding pink, white, or red flowers with swept-back petals appear in winter above heart-shaped marbled leaves.
Description
Cyclamen grows from a round flattened tuber. Its leaves are silver-marbled and rise on long stalks, and the upside-down flowers seem to dance on slim stems through cool months.
Cultivation
Florist cyclamen prefer cool rooms around 15 degrees Celsius, bright indirect light, and watering from below. They go dormant in summer and rebloom in autumn.
Uses
A staple of winter pot plants in Europe and a beloved holiday gift, smaller hardy species are also planted under deciduous trees where they naturalize delightfully.
