A shade-tolerant African annual loved for non-stop summer flowers in pink, red, white, and orange, traditionally one of the worlds best-selling bedding plants.
Description
Impatiens has succulent stems and oval glossy leaves. Five-petaled flowers come in vivid solid colors or bicolors and bloom continuously when conditions are right.
Cultivation
Best in moist rich soil, partial shade, and warm humid weather. The name comes from how the ripe seed pods explode at the lightest touch, scattering seeds.
Uses
Once the most popular shade-loving annual in temperate gardens, impatiens fell back in the 2010s due to downy mildew but is rebounding thanks to disease-resistant new lines.
