A South African low-growing succulent groundcover whose juice-filled leaves sparkle as if frosted, popular for hot dry slopes and coastal plantings.
Description
Ice plant forms a low spreading mat of tubular fleshy leaves that glisten with reflective bladder cells. Daisy-like flowers in magenta, yellow, or orange open in sun and close at night.
Cultivation
Drought and heat tolerant, ice plant covers ground quickly in full sun and gritty soil. Some species can become invasive on coastal cliffs, as has happened in California.
Uses
A staple of low-water gardens and green roofs, ice plant brightens steep slopes through summer. The cooling leaves were once eaten as a vegetable in South Africa.
