What ironworkers do
Ironworkers raise and connect steel beams, columns, and decking on high-rise frames; install reinforcing steel in concrete forms; erect bridges; and fabricate ornamental and architectural metalwork. The trade spans structural, reinforcing, and ornamental specialties.
Training path
The standard path is a three- to four-year apprenticeship through the Iron Workers International union, combining paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction. Apprentices earn industry credentials such as AWS welding certifications.
Work setting
Most union ironworkers work on commercial high-rises, bridges, stadiums, power plants, and industrial facilities. Travel between projects and across regions is common; many ironworkers belong to traveling crews for major construction jobs.
