A tiny floating aquatic plant that forms green blankets across still water, one of the worlds smallest and fastest-growing flowering plants.
Description
Each duckweed plant is a tiny oval green frond a few millimeters across, with a single dangling root. Plants multiply by budding so quickly that dense colonies double within days.
Cultivation
Duckweed thrives on still nutrient-rich water and is sometimes intentionally added to ponds. Excessive growth can shade out submerged plants and reduce dissolved oxygen.
Uses
Ducks and many fish eat duckweed eagerly. The plant is studied for treating polluted water, used as poultry feed, and explored as a fast biomass source for biofuels and protein.
