PLANTS

Dusty Miller

Jacobaea maritima

Filter:

A Mediterranean shrub grown as a tender perennial or annual for its felted silver-white foliage, a popular contrast plant in summer bedding schemes.

Description

Dusty miller has deeply lobed, almost lacy leaves covered in dense felt of white hairs that make the foliage glow silver-grey. Mature plants produce small yellow daisy flowers, often clipped off.

Cultivation

Drought tolerant once established, dusty miller prefers full sun and gritty soil. In mild climates it lives several seasons. In colder gardens it is grown as a summer annual.

Uses

A favorite for moonlit gardens, container plantings, and as a foil for bright flowers, dusty miller is also used in dried floral work for its long-lasting silvery foliage.
