A California rock-dwelling succulent forming chalky pale rosettes, prized by collectors and now protected from poaching for the East Asian houseplant market.
Description
Dudleyas form tight rosettes of fleshy pointed leaves coated in a powdery white wax called farina. Tall flower stalks bear small yellow or red blooms in spring and summer.
Cultivation
They are extremely drought tolerant, growing on rocky coastal cliffs with summer dry seasons. Wiping the leaves removes the protective farina, so handle by the base or pot.
Uses
Dudleyas are popular ornamentals in dry gardens of mild climates and as collector houseplants. Large-scale illegal harvesting on the California coast has led to special poaching laws.
