A tropical American houseplant with large white-splashed leaves whose sap can numb the mouth, giving rise to the common name dumb cane.
Description
Dieffenbachia has a stout cane-like stem topped with broad, pointed leaves marbled in cream and green. Mature stems can branch and form impressive indoor specimens.
Cultivation
It tolerates lower light than many tropicals but grows fastest in bright filtered conditions with warmth and humidity. Sap contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to pets and children if chewed.
Uses
Long popular in offices, lobbies, and homes for its lush bold foliage, dieffenbachia is one of the most widely sold tropical houseplants in the world.
