A Eurasian cool-season turf grass, the standard lawn species across temperate North America despite originating in Europe and northern Asia.
Description
Kentucky bluegrass forms a dense sod via underground rhizomes. Its narrow, boat-tipped, dark green leaves recover well from foot traffic and mowing, creating a fine carpet-like lawn.
Cultivation
It thrives in cool moist climates with rich loamy soil and full sun. In hot summers it may go dormant and brown unless irrigated. Many cultivars vary in disease resistance and color.
Uses
The dominant turfgrass of golf course fairways, sports stadiums, and home lawns across the northern United States, Kentucky bluegrass is also blended into pasture mixes.
