Prayer Plant

Maranta leuconeura

Filter:

A general name for marantas, calatheas, and stromanthes whose leaves fold upward at dusk in a praying gesture, popular ornamental foliage houseplants.

Description

Prayer plants share boldly patterned oval leaves striped or feathered in green, silver, red, or pink. Each evening the leaves rise and fold to expose the often-colored undersides.

Cultivation

All prayer plants need warmth, high humidity, and steady moisture with bright indirect light. Tap water containing fluoride or chlorine causes crispy leaf tips.

Uses

Long popular as living art for shelves, desks, and bathrooms, the praying movement also makes them favorites for time-lapse videos showing leaf motion as light changes.
