Saguaro Cactus

Carnegiea gigantea

Filter:

The iconic columnar cactus of the Sonoran Desert, growing to 12 metres with branching arms and white night-blooming flowers that crown its tip in early summer.

Description

A saguaro has a single massive ribbed trunk that may sprout branching arms only after sixty or more years. White waxy flowers open at night and are pollinated by bats and bees.

Cultivation

It grows extremely slowly, needs full desert sun, deep gritty soil, and protection from frost. In its native range it is a protected plant requiring permits to move.

Uses

The fruit was harvested by the Tohono Oodham for syrup and wine. Saguaros also provide nesting cavities for Gila woodpeckers and elf owls and are an emblem of the American Southwest.
