A wetland herb with fragrant strap-shaped leaves that smell faintly of cinnamon when crushed, used in medicine and ritual across Eurasia and North America.
Description
Sweet flag has upright sword-like leaves rising from a creeping rhizome with a strong aromatic scent. Tiny green-yellow flowers crowd along a spiky, finger-like spadix that emerges sideways from the leaf.
Cultivation
A water plant for pond edges, bogs, and rain gardens, sweet flag tolerates flooding and rich muddy soil. Variegated cultivars are popular for water gardens.
Uses
The aromatic rhizome was once used as a flooring herb to fragrance rooms and as a traditional carminative. Some traditional and Ayurvedic uses continue, though high doses are now considered unsafe.
