Staghorn Fern

Platycerium bifurcatum

Filter:

An Australian epiphytic fern with antler-shaped fronds that grows wedged to tree branches and is mounted on boards as a popular living wall plant.

Description

Staghorn fern has two kinds of fronds: rounded shield fronds that clasp the support and turn brown to anchor the plant, plus forked grey-green antler-like fertile fronds that hang or arch outward.

Cultivation

It can be mounted on cork, hardwood, or a wire basket lined with moss instead of being potted. Soak the whole plant weekly in summer, less in winter, and let it dry between drinks.

Uses

Hugely popular in modern interior design as a living wall sculpture, staghorn fern also thrives outdoors in subtropical climates and forms enormous colonies on rainforest trees.
