A tropical American bulb with strap-like leaves and large fragrant white spidery flowers that bloom in summer above clumps of foliage.
Description
Spider lily forms a clump of strap-shaped green leaves rising from a large bulb. From the centre a tall stem bears clusters of striking white flowers with long curving petals and a webbed central cup.
Cultivation
Grown in warm climates in moist rich soil with sun, the spider lily also thrives at pond edges and is tolerant of brackish water. In cold zones, the bulbs are lifted for winter storage.
Uses
A long-popular garden bulb and cut flower, spider lily is also planted in temple grounds in parts of Asia and the Caribbean. The bulbs are toxic if eaten.
